About Course

This course equips health and social workers with the essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes to provide effective guidance and counselling to individuals, families, and communities. The course emphasises practical approaches to emotional support, mental health care, ethical decision-making, and communication, tailored to the unique challenges faced in health and social care settings.

It is designed based on curriculum for nurses and midwives (diploma and certificate), but with great care for everyone interested. 

Course Objectives:

By the end of this course, learners should be able to:

  2. Develop effective communication and active listening skills for diverse client needs.

  3. Apply counselling techniques in health and social work contexts.

Topic 3: Communication in Counselling
This topic explores the concepts, processes, skills, and channels of communication in counselling, highlighting how communication supports: building trust and rapport, understanding client perspectives, facilitating emotional expression and problem-solving, enhancing collaborative decision-making.

Topic 4: Group counselling
This topic explores the concept and practice of group counselling, focusing on how a trained counsellor facilitates a small group of clients to share experiences, discuss personal or social issues, and support each other’s growth. It highlights the aims, principles, roles, and dynamics of group counselling, emphasizing the importance of confidentiality, respect, active participation, and mutual learning in creating a safe and effective counselling environment.

Topic 5: Ethical Codes in Counselling
This topic explores the ethical codes that guide counselling practice. Counselling is not just about skills and techniques—it is grounded in values, ethics, and professional standards that protect clients and counsellors alike. Ethical codes provide a framework to ensure counselling remains safe, respectful, and beneficial to all parties involved.

Topic 6: Individual Counselling in Health Practice
